Carl Jung
Books by Jung:
* Memories, Dreams, Reflections (1961) is as close as Jung comes to writing an autobio-graphy. About a third is memories, a third his dreams, and a third is reflections on his life and work. Included in Jung's description of his travels is his interview in New Mexico of the Taos Chief, Mountain Lake, who sees America as the "native other." This is the book to read if you read nothing else by Jung, though it is such an absorbing read that you are more than likely to ask for something else by him when you finish it.
Answer to Job (1952) is Jung's commentary on the Bible's Book of Job. Jung sees Job as the courageous man who challenges God to be just and not simply the power-absorbed almighty. In Jung's analysis Job's humanity brings about a change in the deity. This is the book to read if one wants to see what the psychologist can say about religion. It is a bold confrontation with God.
The Red Book: Liber Novus (2009) is the large, elaborate volume in which Jung recorded his own confrontation with the unconscious. In this work the reader can watch Jung work on his major ideas: the archetypes, the collective unconscious, the process of individuation. Jung's calligraphy and paintings are beautifully available in this facsimile edition. The reader is provided with a translation and commentary. Modern Man in Search of a Soul (1033) is a collection of essays in which Jung sets out his basic ideas in clear prose. Here he contrasts the primordial wisdom of medicine men like Mountain Lake and the modern individual who has lost touch with outer nature and the inner world of dreams and emotions.
Man and His Symbols (1964) is a collection of essays, the first one by Jung; the others are by the leading Jungians: Joseph L Henderson, Marie-Louise von Franz, Jolande Jacobi, and Aniela Jaffé. The volume is intended for the general reader and is amply illustrated.
Books about Jung:
* Deirdre Bair. Jung, a Biography (2003) is the most recent, extensive biography and includes new material from the Jung archives. It needs to be read with caution, however.
Sonu Shamdasani. Jung Stripped Bare by his Biographers, Even (2005) is a critical survey of Jung biographies. It is especially critical of the factual errors made by Bair in her biography. The author prefers the first biography, Barbara Hannah's C. G. Jung: His Life and Work, a Biographical Memoir (1976).
Thomas Kirsch. The Jungians (2000) is a history of analytical psychology as it developed and as it is practiced around the world. The author is an American and he pays special attention to Jungians in this country, especially in California where he himself practices.
