Recently recognized by the 2009 Governor's Awards in the Humanities, Dr. Stukes is well known to our Chautauqua audiences having presented: Henry Laurens (2002), Andrew Carnegie (2003), and Eugene V. Debs (2004) and Paul Robeson discussion (2007). He has led discussions on Franklin & Eleanor (2009) Teddy Roosevelt (2007) and Paul Robeson  (2006) in prior Chautauqua Library Discussions.   He also performs as Francis Marion, Henry Ford and John D. Rockefeller. He is a beloved Professor Emeritus Lander University, Erskine College and Francis Marion College.  He always makes us laugh and learn.

UNIFYED SOL POETS Representing Upstate South Carolina Robert and Kimbi Mullins aka Moody Black and Kimbi the Goddess are spoken word artists that travel the country to enlighten and entertain. Both Moody and Kimbi the Goddess are regular hosts at Coffee and Poetry at Coffee Underground in Greenville, S.C. Unifyed Sol Poets has created a buzz that is echoed in the following achievements: Moody Black was a member of the 2004-2005 Upstate South Carolina Slam Team, the 2006 Spartanburg S.C. Grand Slam Champion, and the slam master for the Upstate South Carolina Slam Team from 2006-2008, featured on Turner South “My South” commercial in 2006, Witsendpoetry board member since 2004, published in Still Home (Book of poems from Spartanburg, S.C. poets) Kimbi the Goddess was a member of the 2008 Upstate South Carolina Slam Team, the 2008 Upstate South Carolina Grand Slam Champion and is the 2009 South Carolina Queen Slam Champion Both have collectively performed in schools, universities, and churches: they have won several slams throughout South Carolina and have competed nationally in many slams. Together they are like the Ashford and Simpson, and the Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee of Spoken Word.

RUTH MORRIS has been on the English faculty at Greenville Tech since August of 1990. She has taught at the University of South Carolina and Forsyth Technical College in North Carolina. She has, as well, taught with a JTPA program in Yadkinville, North Carolina. The courses she has taught include composition, business communications, American and women’s literature, and English as a second language. Her undergraduate education was in literature and political science. She has studied linguistics, literature, and educational philosophy and social theory at the graduate level. When not grading compositions, and frequently while grading them, she would much rather be about 60 feet underwater with a tank on her back, meeting the locals.

A 37 year veteran of education with degrees in English and Education,  Bev has been a high school librarian, high school instructor, and a professor of English, Speech, and Theater at Greenville Technical College, Tri-County Technical College, and Strayer University. Much of her out of class time has been spent in curriculum development and occasionally, she contributes text book material to publishing houses. A member of SCTEA and TYCA, she has presented at conferences and other venues. Her favorite extra-curricular activity has been coordinating travel abroad for students and teachers since 1993. When not in the classroom, you can most likely find her at the Peace Center or at home with her horses!

Moderator:  George Frein, PhD
 
Dr. Frein, Artistic Director of Greenville Chautauqua, will portray Dr. Seuss in the June Festival.  Dr. Frein taught in the Philosophy and Religion Department at the University of North Dakota from 1968 to 1997.  He became a performing scholar with the Great Plains Chautauqua Society in 1986, portraying Father De Smet, Henry Adams, Herman Melville, and Mark Twain.  On retirement he moved to Greenville where he helped establish the Greenville/Asheville Chautauqua.  Here he added to his cast of characters, John Winthrop, John Adams, Dr. Seuss, John James Audubon and Abraham Lincoln.
