Greenville Chautauqaua

Greenville Chautauqua has been performing educational interactive historical theater continuously since 1999.  It was chartered as a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization in 2003. - EIN 26-0058066

Chautauqua exists because we live in a community that recognizes that a culture which is moving forward needs to know where it has been.  In a world where many forces seek to divide us, we need opportunities to come together and discuss the ideas, personalities and events that have shaped our identity as Americans.  These programs are sustained by a dedicated group of volunteers who give of their time and talent, and a community that digs into its pockets to support this egalitarian experience where everyone – rich and poor, educated and unlettered – can participate and interact with our history.

In 2010-11 we produced 61 free events for an audience of 10,958.

Our Mission

Greenville Chautauqua brings history to life, through interactive theater, where compelling discussion stimulates critical thinking. We celebrate the diversity of our culture through a variety of voices from the past. Because our history belongs to all of us, we are committed to keeping our events free, fun and accessible to the entire community.

Our Vision

A brighter future through an enlightened understanding of the past.

Our Values

  • Education: We foster multi-generational, life-long learning.  We promote the art of active reading and the development of critical thinking.

  • Collaboration: We initiate and cultivate collaboration with other organizations.
  • Fun: "We like to laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained, and delighted." - Dr. Seuss

Why Humanities Education?

"I must study politics and war, so my sons may study mathematics, philosophy and history, so their sons can study painting, poetry, and music." -- John Adams

The Humanities is the study and development of human thought -- the ways of looking at the world through the study of philosophy, history, literature, religion, jurisprudence, languages, history, art, music, fine arts, etc. It is a literary approach to the world. Books are the way the past reveals itself -- the gift of one generation to the next.

From the Prince and the Pauper: : "When I am King people will not only have food and shelter, but teachings out of books -- for a full belly is little worth when the mind is empty."

Along with need for food and shelter, man needs mental stimulation. The greatest and most urgent of life skills --the one that defines us as human beings--is critical thinking.  In the guise of entertainment, Chautauqua gathers generations together to think about and discuss the problems of the day. We're not about answers; we're about asking questions.

In the words of Maya Angelou: "We need not only to survive but to thrive."
